Ways An Electrician Can Improve The Safety Of Your Home

by Sherri Silva

You're probably already aware that electricity, though convenient, is a dangerous thing. An electrician can make your home safer not only in terms of ensuring the integrity of the electrical system but also in other ways as well. Following are a variety of ways they can improve the overall safety of your home.

Electrical Integrity

Firstly, an electrician can make sure the circuitry and switchboard are safe and that they can cater to your power needs. Overloading the system by layering power boards in sockets is a dangerous practice. It can cause overheating as more current is demanded than the circuitry was set up to handle. Additionally, the extra cords can be a tripping hazard.

If this sounds like your household, an electrician can add extra outlets and possibly upgrade the capacity of the system. They can also check that the switchboard is fitted with an RCD (residual-current device: circuit breaker) and test it. This device will instantly cut the electricity if it detects any current leaking from the circuitry, thus lessening the chances of electrocution.

Security

Some electricians also install security systems. At a more basic level, however, they can improve the safety and security of your property by wiring up motion sensor lights outside. Other lighting solutions include floodlights and decorative lights. A well-lit property won't be so appealing to a potential burglar, especially if they're lit up with a sensor light when creeping around your house. The lights will also make household members safer when they arrive home in the evening. It could save someone from slipping and injuring themselves in an annoyingly simple and avoidable accident.

Old Houses

An electrician can also inspect old wiring that may be worn out—before it starts a house fire! If you live in an old house, it may be worth having the wiring inspected if it hasn't been upgraded. The insulating layer over the wires can wear out over time, and if a live wire touches building elements in the walls, it could start a fire.

Convenient Light Switches and Outlets

An electrician can also improve the convenience of your home and make it safer that way. Sometimes light switches are in odd locations. A room may have two doors, for example, but only have a light switch near one of them. An electrician can install an additional light switch so both doors are covered. You then won't have to stumble around in the dark at night. Moving electrical outlets to convenient spots can also improve safety, as you won't need extension cords as often.

About Me

Commercial Electrical Support

If you run a commercial unit, you will want to make sure that the electrical system is kept in good working order. When I decided to buy a new commercial building, I called in a team of electrical contractors. They were able to assess the condition of the wires and fuse box in the building. They produced a report which detailed the work needed to make sure the electrical system was safe. I was really impressed with the service they provided and the work they completed. I decided to start this blog so I could offer advice to other people.
